MTR Contract 822

HK’s longest Rail Tunnel which forms part of the Express Rail Link (XRL) connecting Kowloon Central Terminus with Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

Year: 2013

Country: Hong Kong

Contract Value (US$): 583 Million

MTRC Contract 822 in Hong Kong comprised approximately 7.6 km of drill-and-blast tunnelling at depths of up to 960 m, including major ventilation and access adits, two ventilation buildings, and a 90 m-deep ventilation shaft. The works included in-situ concrete linings and passenger walkways for the main tunnels. Delivered in a dense urban and mountainous environment, the project required careful management of complex logistics, safety constraints, and highly variable geological conditions, representing a technically demanding underground infrastructure scheme within Hong Kong’s strategic rail network expansion.

Andreas Tauschinger served as Leighton Asia’s Tunnel Operations Manager, responsible for managing the tunnelling works through challenging ground conditions and coordinating multidisciplinary construction activities. The tunnel works were successfully completed in early 2020 to the full satisfaction of the client, MTR Corporation (MTRC), marking the delivery of a critical component of Hong Kong’s modern mass transit infrastructure.
