M7 Clem Jones Tunnel

The Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7) in Brisbane, Australia, comprises twin road tunnels of 12.5 m diameter constructed through hard tuff rock using two hard rock TBMs. Delivered by a Tier 1 Joint Venture, the project represented one of Australia’s most significant urban tunnelling undertakings, forming a vital north–south traffic link beneath the Brisbane River and the city centre. Constructed over a four-year period, the toll road tunnel opened to operations in March 2010, providing major congestion relief and enhancing urban mobility within Brisbane’s metropolitan transport network.

Dieter Meyer served as Tunnel Director throughout the construction phase of this technically complex inner-city tunnelling project. At the time of completion, the M7 Clem Jones Tunnel was the longest road tunnel in Australia, marking a milestone in the country’s underground transport infrastructure and demonstrating advanced tunnelling capability under challenging urban and geological conditions.
