Huguenot Tunnel

Twin 4km long road tunnels for the main Motorway between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Year: 1984

Country: Republic of South Africa

Contract Value (US$): 300 Million

This project formed a key component of South Africa’s 1980s national infrastructure programme to connect the Cape Province with Gauteng in the northeast via the main national motorway, the N1. The alignment passes through the Du Toitskloof Mountains, with overburden reaching up to 700 m. Andreas Tauschinger served as Tunnel Engineer on the project..

The twin tunnels were constructed using Drill & Blast methods, with complex portal sections in soft ground requiring vacuum lance dewatering techniques. Due to its technical complexity and status as the longest road tunnel in South Africa, the project team, comprising Hochtief AG and Concor Ltd., received the Contractor’s Award in 1986.
