High Speed Rail Link Cologne to Frankfurt

219km long High-Speed Rail Link, with major bridges and tunnels between Cologne and Frankfurt.

Year: 1995

Country: Germany

Contract Value (US$): 2,200 Million

The Cologne–Frankfurt High-Speed Rail Corridor is one of Germany’s most significant national transport infrastructure projects, delivered for Deutsche Bahn (DB) as part of the Federal Transport Plan. Routed largely along the Rhine Valley and the A3 motorway corridor, the line required the construction of numerous major tunnels and bridges across challenging terrain. Designed for high-speed passenger services, the project substantially reduced travel times between key economic centres and formed a critical component of Germany’s modern long-distance rail network, strengthening north–south connectivity and supporting the development of high-capacity, high-performance rail infrastructure.

Rupert Sternath served as designated Project Director for all tunnel works, appointed by Deutsche Bahn for the period from 1997 to 2001. His role covered the management and coordination of complex underground construction along the alignment, contributing to the successful delivery of a technically demanding programme and to the establishment of one of Europe’s leading high-speed rail corridors.
