Gotthard Base Tunnel – Lot Bodio-Faido
The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is the core project of the high-speed rail link between Zurich and Milan, running beneath the Central Alps..
Year: 2003
Country: Switzerland
Contract Value (US$): 2,000 Million
The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) forms the central element of the high-speed rail link between Zurich and Milan and is a core component of Switzerland’s New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA). At approximately 57 km, it is the longest railway tunnel in the world and a landmark project in modern underground engineering, creating a flat, high-capacity trans-Alpine rail corridor that significantly enhances European north–south connectivity.
Constructed under highly variable geological conditions and extreme overburdens, the project represents one of Europe’s most technically demanding infrastructure undertakings. Andreas Tauschinger served as Project Director for a key section of the GBT during the most challenging construction phase, providing leadership while complex geological conditions were successfully overcome, contributing to the delivery of this strategically transformative transport link.
