Copenhagen District Heating Tunnel

Construction of a ca. 4km long deep tunnel to transfer heating water from an existing Power Station to the centre of Copenhagen.

Year: 2005

Country: Denmark

Contract Value (US$): 80 Million

This project was constructed by a JV of MT Hojgaard and Hochtief (AG) and consisted of 3 deep shafts and a 4km long EPB TBM drive through the chalk formations of Copenhagen. Challenges were the large water inflows and flintstone bands, which were highly abrasive in nature.

The tunnel was driven under sensitive buildings including the Amalienborg of the Danish Royal Family, where minimal settlement and disruption were allowed. Andreas Tauschinger was a JV Board member during the course of the construction work which were successfully completed in 2008.
